Re:"...Having s...Hey, Luke, you're not at all rude.

Re:
"...Having spent years working on stuff in isolation, throwing it all into a social mix is a daunting proposition, especially if my comics and opinions are as unpopular as I imagine they might be in that setting..."

The thing about CCS (like the Kubert School circa '76), all the students were pretty much in your shoes: highly motivated, opinionated, and not-particularly-social beings tossed into the new mix. Don't let that stop ya.

Re:
"...Money is another issue.."

Understood. Check it out, and check out options with Michelle at CCS. We're all (myself included) wrestling with that factor.

Re:
"...I can say that I'm by no means only into classic Illustrator guys. I've been getting more and more into certain UG guys, like Corben, Metzger and Jack Katz (is he even a UG artist?), certain European Humanoids-related artists and peripheral mainstreamers Guy Davis, Vincent Locke and Gary Gianni..."

It's all in the mix now, if it wasn't before. Everyone you've mentioned is on my radar, certainly, and thus to be covered eventually; and of course, James Sturm worked with Guy Davis on Unstable Molecules, so there ya go.

Re:
"...I kind of just wanted to know if that sorta vibe was present at CCS..."

It's a wide vibe, Luke. You'd expand the bandwidth accordingly, and that's all to the good!

Re:
"...Out of curiosity, care to mention any comics you've been into lately Steve? Any recent discoveries?"

Keep your eyes on this blog -- I've already written about some of 'em, and many more to follow.

Thanks for the blogversation, Luke!SRBissettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14426874992235196378noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15861891.post-1134021637301838712005-12-08T01:00:00.000-05:002005-12-08T01:00:00.000-05:00Hey, James Sturm is the co-founder of CCS -- Roy C...Hey, James Sturm is the co-founder of CCS -- Roy Crane is his artistic idol. As for the 'aesthetic' of the school, it's all over the map, as any gathering of 20 students and half-a-dozen instructors (including, yes, James Kochalka) should be.

If it's any barometer, the span of requests for help I've fielded from the students thus far runs the gamut from Bruce Timm/BATMAN animation material to zombie reference imagery; the final projects I've read thus far stretch from analysis of classic Swedish funny animal comics to Hideshi Hino's distinctive horror manga -- and that's just the tip of the 'berg.

I asked his past week for the students's suggestions of topics to cover next semester, including artists they'd like to find out more about: those name requests include Mike Mignola, Gary Panter and Walt Simonson, among many others.

Don't let your prejudices keep you from applying to CCS, Luke. If YOU attend, we'll have at least one Hogarth/Frazetta man aboard... and hey, I'm teaching, so there's my inky fingers in the mix, too.

I'd say James and Michelle have made sure diversity of tastes in all permutations is already a staple of CCS, and that's to be celebrated.SRBissettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14426874992235196378noreply@blogger.com
